Lao People's Democratic Republic's Constitution of 1991 with Amendments through 2003

This Constitution is the constitution of the people’s democratic regime in our country. It recognises the great achievements of our people in the course of their struggles for national liberation [and their] protection and construction of the country[,] and [it] defines the political regime, the socioeconomic system, the regimes of national security, defence and foreign affairs, the rights and obligations of citizens and the system of organisation of state apparatus in the new period. This is the first time in the history of our nation that the right of self-determination of the people has been defined in the fundamental law of the country
