Large-Scale Land Acquisitions for Agricultural Development in Myanmar: A Review of Past and Current Processes

The objective of this study is to provide a synthesis of historical and contemporary processes of large-scale land acquisition for agricultural development in Myanmar. It relies essentially on secondary sources and complementary interviews and field work. The paper endeavors to • establish a genealogy of agricultural land acquisition processes in Myanmar • present the institutional framework governing large-scale land acquisition for agricultural development • analyze the current situation of large-scale land acquisition for agricultural development • examine land conflicts between large-scale agriculture and smallholder farmers • provide recommendations that could inform a wider and multi-stakeholder dialogue on the issue of large-scale land acquisition for agricultural development
